Privacy Policy — Gmail Event Watcher

Last updated: September 24, 2026

Gmail Event Watcher (“the app”) is a personal-use application built and operated by an individual developer. It is not offered as a public product or service — it has exactly one user, its developer, and this policy is published to satisfy Google API Services' requirement that any application requesting access to Google user data disclose, in a publicly accessible document, what data it accesses and how that data is handled.

Information the app accesses

The app connects to Google APIs using OAuth and currently requests the following scope:

  • Gmail — read/write (gmail.modify): lets the app read messages, threads, and labels in the connected Gmail account, and take actions such as applying labels, marking messages read/unread, archiving, or sending mail on the user's behalf. This scope does not permit permanently deleting messages or the mailbox itself.

Google Calendar access is planned for a future version of the app (to watch for and react to calendar events) but is not yet implemented. When that scope is added, this policy will be updated to describe it before the corresponding permission is requested.

How the app uses Google user data

Gmail data retrieved by the app is used solely to provide the app's own user-facing functionality for its single user — for example, watching for and reacting to inbox events. Specifically:

  • Message and thread content is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing (for example, interpreting or summarizing an email so the app can decide what action to take). This is the only third party that receives Gmail content, and it receives it only as needed to power that feature, under Anthropic's API terms of service.
  • Gmail data is never sold, rented, or used for advertising or ad targeting.
  • Gmail data is never used to train generalized AI/ML models unrelated to this app, and is not shared with any other third party.
  • No humans other than the developer (the app's sole user) view this data, except as required to maintain security, comply with law, or with the user's own consent.

The app's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Data storage and retention

Data the app reads from Gmail (and metadata about actions it takes) is stored in a SQLite database on a private, developer-controlled server. It is kept indefinitely at this time — there is no automatic deletion schedule yet, since the app is still under active development for a single user. That database is not publicly accessible and is not exposed to the internet.

Data sharing

Other than Google (to access the connected account) and Anthropic (to process message content as described above), the app does not share, sell, or transfer Gmail data to any third party, except where required to comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable governmental request.

Security

The app takes reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect the data it stores, including running on a private server not intended for public access and limiting stored data to what is needed for the app to function. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, and no guarantee of absolute security is made.

Revoking access

Access can be revoked at any time from Google Account permissions. Revoking access stops the app from making further requests to the connected Google account; it does not automatically delete data already stored by the app. To request deletion of previously stored data, contact the email address below.

Children's privacy

This app is a personal tool for its developer's own use and is not directed at, or knowingly used by, children.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as the app's functionality changes — for example, when Calendar access is added. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision.
